Union County in the North Georgia Mountains

Questions answered by Lamar Paris, County Commissioner

Questions on Banks

Q.  Each week in the North Georgia News there are articles and photos where representatives of the local banks are giving money to different charities. Could our community charities function without this financial assistance?
A.  I have always said that we have one of the most giving communities around and we have many businesses and individuals who are so unselfish with their donations, especially this time of the year.  However,  the banks definitely offer an added dimension to our community of givers.  They always seem to unselfishly give to so many organizations and needy individuals in our community.  While we may take this for granted, we certainly should not.  Banks, like everyone, are hurting financially right now, yet they continue to give and we should be thankful for that.

Q. How many banks do we have in Union County?
A.  We have four banks.  United Community Bank, Appalachian Community Bank, Bank of Blairsville and Cadence Bank.   Nantahala Bank and Trust has a lending office on the square, but is not yet a full service bank.  The home office of United Community Bank’s holding company is also located in Blairsville.

Q. How many people are employed in Union County in the banking industry?
A.  This is where it gets exciting for our county.  We have a huge number of employees who work in the banking industry.  There are approximately  130 employees in the  five local banks and United Community Bank’s holding company in Blairsville employees an additional 315 that provides banking services support for their 107  bank branches located in three states.

Q.  How is the economy affecting the banking industry in our county?
A.  All you have to do is look in the newspaper and see the number of foreclosures listed to have an idea.  They are suffering like all of our businesses.  Most have had to trim some staff and cut back in all areas of operation where they can.  That is why it is so special to see that even with their loan losses; they are still being proactive in helping out individuals and organizations in our community by giving of their money and time.

Q.  Are our local banks still loaning money.  We hear that banks are not loaning money and that is hurting the economy?
A.  One banker asked me to let the public know that they are “absolutely”  loaning money and that is what they are in business to do.  Understandably, you need good credit and an adequate down payment or collateral, but they are loaning money and want your business.

Banks are the backbone of any community.  Most every business and many individuals depend on them for not only their operation and expansion capitol, but for their deposits.   We take for granted that we can just pull into the bank, cash a check, make a deposit and take off, without ever realizing the cost to the bank just to provide that service.  Next time you are in one of our banks, let them know that you appreciate what they do for our community.  Let us  hope that our banks as well as other business and individuals have a much healthier and happy 2010.
